Tim Miller
Design Researcher

Senior design researcher with 15+ years across industry and applied research. I work upstream in early-stage, ambiguous contexts — using qualitative inquiry to frame problems, synthesise insight, and translate research into clear direction for product, experience, and organisational decision-making.

Cinematic Translations

Explored how ethnographic research on nuclear fusion could be translated into narrative form. Used speculative cinema as a research translation device to reframe complex scientific insight for non-specialist audiences, resulting in a narrative film concept deck used to support discussion and strategic communication.

User Feedback

Examined product reviews as cultural artefacts rather than datapoints. Reframed feedback through qualitative analysis and design research to challenge conventional interpretation in product development, informing alternative approaches to insight generation and team sensemaking.

Interview in Progress

Investigated job interviews as designed performances rather than neutral assessments. Used participatory and drama-based research to surface hidden dynamics of evaluation and self-presentation, shaping a training format for improved communication in high-stakes contexts.

Technical Breakdown

Studied breakdowns in PowerPoint use as moments of organisational insight. Applied qualitative inquiry to analyse failure as a productive research lens, proposing alternative models for knowledge-sharing and collaborative practice.

Power Point

Researched how presentation software shapes authority, collaboration, and performance. Repositioned PowerPoint as an active component of organisational systems, generating insight relevant to enterprise tools and emerging presentation interfaces.

BeQuasi.com

Explored how experimental design research can be made publicly accessible. Designed a participatory web interface translating complex inquiry into an open, navigable format, demonstrating how research can be surfaced beyond academic contexts.

Design Education

Used postgraduate design education as a research environment. Framed studios and briefs as sites of research approaches for applied enquiry, testing research-led approaches to problem framing, synthesis, and design decision-making in industry-adjacent contexts.
